Limetree Care Home unveils its new in-house pub and landlady

Limetree resident Peggy, who spent 35 years as a landlady, was overjoyed when she heard that the Lambeth Arms was opening in her care home

Bringing the outside world into a care home and creating different environments where residents can spend time, helps to ensure that they can engage in their favourite pastimes and visit different settings without leaving the comfort of their own home. This is why Limetree Care Home in Brixton decided to establish its newly renovated pub, the Lambeth Arms.

Providing people with a choice as to where they spend time is important for their wellbeing, while also supporting dementia care, as it can help to rekindle cherished memories from the past. This was certainly the case for Peggy, one of Lime Tree’s residents, who was overjoyed when she heard that the Lambeth Arms’ was opening.

Peggy, who is pictured above, had spent more than 35 years of her life as the landlady of a local pub in Vauxhall, so she was more than eager to see what The Lambeth Arms had to offer. Limetree home manager, Jonathan escorted both Peggy and her daughter Carole on a tour of the pub and as soon as Peggy stepped into the room, her face lit up with joy. The small details like the beer mats, dart board and spirit shelf transported her back to her days as a landlady and when she stepped behind the bar, she immediately felt at home. The Lambeth Arms had found its new landlady! Now, with support from Limetree staff, Peggy will serve drinks to residents and doubtless teach the team a thing or two about what goes into running a successful pub.

Carole, who was delighted to see her mum with a smile on her face, explains: “Exploring a space that holds special significance for my Mum, who was a licensee for so much of her life, was truly touching. Walking through the Lambeth Arms not only brought back many cherished memories for her; it also enabled us to appreciate the effort and care that has been put into creating a space that will help to foster a spirit of joy and a sense of community for all of Lime Tree’s residents.”
