Barchester Care Awards celebrate culinary excellence in care

Abin Babu, from Friston House Care Home, was named Barchester’s National Head Chef of the Year 2025 in recognition of the dedication, passion and integrity he shows every day towards his care home and its residents

The Barchester Care Awards 2025 have once again highlighted the exceptional talent and commitment that define excellence across the care sector. Among this year’s winners, Abin Babu, from Friston House Care Home, was named Barchester’s National Head Chef of the Year 2025

Abin was nominated by his home for the Divisional Cook Off in Birmingham, in recognition of the dedication, passion and integrity he shows every day towards his care home and its residents. Competing against four other chefs within his division, his talent and commitment earned him a place as a finalist from Barchester’s South Division.

At the finals in Edgbaston on 14 August, Abin stood out for his creative, well-balanced and beautifully presented menu, which impressed the judges for its originality and nutritional focus. His winning combination of skill and heart culminated at the national awards ceremony at the Midland Hotel in Manchester, where he was announced as Chef of the Year 2025 - a proud achievement for both Abin and the team at Friston House.

“Cooking in care gives me a sense of pride, it is different, but it gives my passion a purpose which is so rewarding in itself, ” says Abin. “Every meal is made with love, and every plate tells a story.  Winning this award is one of my biggest achievements, and I’m proud to represent Friston House and Barchester.”

Abin began his Barchester career at Cheverton Lodge, where he worked for several years before returning to the organisation in 2017 to join Friston House. His colleagues describe him as a chef who combines professional skill with genuine care for residents’ wellbeing - a balance that is reflected in every dish he creates.

Redefining Cheffing in Care

As the wider hospitality industry continues to adapt to changing pressures, Barchester Healthcare is helping to redefine what a culinary career in care can offer. Through its internal Chef Academy Programme, chefs receive structured training, professional mentoring and development opportunities that support clear career progression.

The exclusive programme combines the standards of professional catering with the practical demands of care. Chefs are trained not only in advanced cooking and presentation but also in how nutrition and food quality can enhance residents’ health and wellbeing. For many, it provides a stable and fulfilling alternative to the long and unpredictable hours often associated with the wider hospitality sector.

A Career with Purpose

Abin’s success highlights the growing appeal of cheffing in care as a long-term and rewarding career path. It offers professional development, work-life balance and the opportunity to make a direct difference to people’s daily lives.
